If you’re wondering what to wear for family photos, you’re not alone. Choosing outfits for family pictures can be overwhelming - especially when you want everyone to look great and feel comfortable. Planning your session can be tricky enough without having to agonize over outfits. But don’t let the wardrobe choices stress you out. Here are some tips to help your family look stellar on the day of your session so you can relax and focus on delivering those genuine smiles and natural moments.
Dress for the weather and the location.
If you’re having your photos taken outdoors, make sure you’re considering the season. Sundresses are usually a poor choice for fall, and as gorgeous as your pea coat is, it won’t serve you well in the summer months. Also consider the environment; your bright white shoes won’t be so bright and white after a tromp in the woods. So what should you do? Plan to dress in light layers so you can adjust comfortably throughout the session. Jewel tones and earth tones photograph very well in outdoor settings, whereas white clothing is better suited indoors where it can’t get dirty as easily.
Be comfortable for natural family photos.
If you feel uncomfortable, you will look uncomfortable. If the heels you picked out will hurt after ten minutes, reconsider something that will last throughout your session so you’re not wincing in pain after every step. A favorite sweater that you feel confident in just might serve you better than something brand new and scratchy. Feeling comfortable will help you to be relaxed and natural in front of the camera.
Coordinate outfits, but don’t match.
Matching shirts may have been the height of fashion years ago, but now it can feel a bit dated. Instead of choosing one color to dress around, start by selecting a patterned accent piece for one family member. Maybe it’s a dress, or a scarf, or a vest. Then, use the colors within that pattern to create a palette of 2-3 colors for the rest of the family. Can’t find a pattern? Choose a few colors that fit together well and select different shades for everyone. Outfits should coordinate within that color family and fit together seasonally. This will give the impression that you fit together without looking like you went shopping just for this picture.
Don’t forget the details!
- Rings, watches, necklaces - all may be visible, so don’t forget to check your accessories.
- Writing on clothing may be cute, but oftentimes it may be difficult to read and distracting in the final photo. Consider simpler outfits.
- Skip neon colors, which can cause bright color casts on skin. Instead, opt for jewel tones and earth tones.
- One pattern can be a great way to tie a family look together, but don’t overdo it. Avoid visual clutter by ditching large, high contrast prints and mixing in plenty of solid colors.
